Julep Maven: May 2014

I'm late in posting this but since Julep is still sending boxes to Mavens, I'm not feeling too far behind.

May's theme is: "The Fresh Twist Collection."

The quote card featured the pilè wand and Coco Chanel.

This month was the roll-out of the much discussed pilé wand. The traditional four style profiles came with a wand, including the usually polish only It Girl. I actually loved the colors this month, and would love to have the whole collection. I just couldn't justify the cost right now.

So, what were these much loved colors you ask?

Laree - "golden pink taffeta shimmer"
Saaya - "golden apricot shimmer"

I almost went for these, but then the boards had me scared that Saaya would be too much like Karen, which I don't particularly like. Now having seen Saaya in person (my co-worker brought her in for show-and-tell), I love her. Laree is really pretty in person too.

Maddy - "raspberry sorbet shimmer"
Ramona - "muted lavender rose crème"

I think these two colors might be my favorite, but I think that for each ones I look at. I really love Ramona. They will be on my list to score at some point in the future.

Kam - "vintage spearmint crème"
Jules - "warm powder pink crème"

I really like these colors too, especially Jules. I hesitated over Kam, but the pictures I have seen are so much prettier than the awful Julep ones. I actually want to get both of these colors too.

A new style profile emerged this month. I don't know if it was just for May, or if it will be sticking around. It was all polish, which makes me think that It Girl will have products moving forward.

Iona - "hydrangea blue crème"
Jules - "warm powder pink"
Paulette - "golden lilac tulle shimmer"

Color Crush was interesting since it contained Iona, which is not in any of the usual profiles and then mixed an It Girl and Boho Glam polish. If I hadn't wanted to try the wand I would have totally gone for this trio.

The non-polish profile also did not contain the wand.

Brilliance Glycolic Scrub - previously released under a different name.
Rock Star Hand Crème - also not a new product.

All this I passed up, and opted for:

Jeanne
"Jet-set blue crème"
$14/$11.20 maven

First, I have to note the black side of the bottle is gone. I'm kinda sad. I liked it. Anyhoo, Jeanne I liked better online than in person. I really kind of regret not snapping up a different set. Especially since I ended up getting a lot of blue this month.

Paulette
"Golden lilac tulle shimmer"
$14/$11.20 maven

Paulette is really pretty, and the main reason I picked this set. She is pretty in person too.

Pilé Wand
$25/$20 Maven

"Bring more accuracy, control, and fun to every manicure—especially when polishing with your non-dominant hand.

Kit includes: Plié Wand, Plié overcap, Precision brush

What it is:
An ergonomic nail polishing tool designed to solve common polishing pain points and give you better results. Imagine if you’d spent your whole life writing with a pen cap and then someone finally handed you a full-size pen. That’s what it feels like to polish with the Plié Wand.
What it does:
  • Long, balanced design improves leverage, comfort, and control
  • Flexible handle twists and bends so you can get a better grip
  • Plié overcap fits on any Julep nail polish and attaches to Plié Wand
  • Precision brush lets you polish closer to your nail"

  • I have only done a small test with the wand, but I actually do like it. I used the caps on the polish, but it also came with the precision brush and an extra.

The results of my testing (no clean up):

It looks much better than usual. This is with my dominant hand. The wand also came with a booklet.

The featured add-ons this month were:

    Pilé Wand Creativity Kit
    $10/$8 Maven
    ($4.99 as an add-on)

"Take your nail look to the next level with two fun, easy-to-use nail art tools designed to work with the Plié Wand."

Pilé Striping Brush - "features superfine bristles for French manis, swirls, and stripes

Pilé Dotting Tool - "features a rounded tip for dots and hearts"

I did add this add-on to my selection. I'm hoping to be able to attempt some nail art with this set.

Brigitte - Classic with a Twist
    "Bright white crème"
    Jet - It Girl
    "Jet black crème"
    Sienna Classic with a Twist
    "Sophisticated, shimmer gold"
    Madison Classic with a Twist
    "Electric neon hot pink crème"
    Bette - Bombshell
    "Electric neon purple crème"
    Pilé Striping Brush
    Pilé Dotting Tool

I don't remember what the add-on price for this set was, but I was tempted. However, I already have Jet and Sienna. I also have a white, and have no interest in Bette. Not worth it for just Madison.

This image was really misleading, as it led me to believe I would be able to get these polishes as a duo. Nope. They were separate add-ons. Lame.

I passed on both of these colors too, but at least this makes it clear that the colors are not a set.

My last two add-ons were not featured. I choose to give the mystery polish add-on a shot. That polish turned out to be very similar to one of my May colors.

    Bess - It Girl
    "Baby blue crème"
    $14/$11.20 Maven
    ($4.99 as an add-on)

Yep, more blue. It is really, really similar to Paulette. Another disappointing mystery from Julep.

    My last add-on went to:

    Cuticle Pusher
"Tame overgrown cuticles with the same pro tool used in over 250,000 professional Julep Nail Parlor manis"
    $14/$11.20 Maven
    ($7.99 as an add-on)

I decided to get this for a few reasons. First, I've heard good things about it and that it could double as a clean-up tool. Second, it is almost half the normal cost. Third, this is the first time in a long time It had been in stock. I haven't used it yet, but it is a good, solid tool.

No bonus item this month. Not even candy.

The monthly coupon code is 25% off the hand scrub.

The other deal was the Perk10 that has been making the rounds since last month.

Summary: I loved the colors this month, and actually like the wand more than I was expecting. Next month is the debut of the customizable maven boxes, so that should be interesting. It is also my birthday month so I am hoping for a good birthstone polish!
