Julep Maven: Memorial Day Mystery Boxes

Each month Julep releases some kind of mystery box, and in May they released ten. Yes, ten mystery boxes of various prices and items. I had vowed not to order any more since usually this is the way Julep pawns their old items off on people, however they suckered me back in.

Per Julep, there was no overlap between the boxes, so mavens could feel free to order all ten. I settled for three...

Mystery Box No. 6
$15 ($42 value)

Clue: "This box was made for walkin'. With Mint Condition Pedi Crème and toe separators in each box, this is your best pick for a successful sandal season."

Mystery Box No. 8
$15 ($46 value)

Clue: "Breathe easy. No polish lover's collection is complete without our Oxygen Nail Treatment, and a cherry pie red like Sheila (Classic with a Twist)."

Mystery Box No. 9
$10 ($30 value)

Clue: "Splatter & smooth. The cool Mediterranean blue of Taylor (Classic with a Twist) on the outside, a little walk on the wild side within."

Over the weekend spoilers started appearing online, but two of my boxes weren't spolied. Today was a good day for nail mail. (One box isn't from Julep, but features Julep product. More on that in another post.)

And now for the good stuff!

Mystery Box No. 6

Mint Condition Pedi Crème
$20/$16 Maven

"Formerly known as The Best Pedi Crème Ever!, our much-loved foot moisturizer is back with a new name and the same fast-acting formula.
Features & Benefits:
  • Provides soothing moisture and gentle exfoliation for rough, dry skin
  • Formulated with alpha hydroxy acids, shea butter, coconut oil, essential oils, and vitamin E"
  • I have been wanting to try this out for awhile, and since the maven price is normally more than the mystery box it was a risk-free way to try it. It has a nice mint smell.

    Toe Separators
    ~$2
    (not currently available)

The other promised item in the box. These seem pretty flimsy, so I doubt I will get much use out of them.

    MadisonClassic with a Twist
    "Tropical coral crème"
    $14/$11.20 Maven
    ($4.99 on sale)

I like Madison, but I don't love her. I actually ended up getting two of her today. More on that in another post. I will be swapping one away. The other will make a fun summer color.

    Foot File
    $6/$4.80 maven
    ($4.20 on sale)

"Julep's professional pedicure tool smooths away calluses and softens rough skin. For best results use with The Best Pedi Prep Ever!"

A useful tool, and goes well with the pedi crème. I'll be putting this to work soon.

Total: so, the value is never as promised - $42 in this case. I paid $15, and felt the maven value was $27.19. Still a good deal, especially since there weren't any dupes for me and I will use all the products.

    Mystery Box No. 8

    Oxygen Nail Treatment
    $18/$14.40 Maven

"Complete nail care and make-up all in one bottle. Made with a patented Hexanal formulation, nails are restructured to a stronger, thicker, and smoother condition in just one stroke. Advanced plant stem cell complex provides anti-aging benefits, while ground-breaking oxygen technology forms a nonocclusive film on the nail, proving resistant to water penetration and improving the permeability to oxygen. Results are nails that are structurally stronger, and less prone to breakage and splitting."

Again, a product that is worth the cost of the box alone. I have wanted to try this product for awhile as well. My co-worker loves it, and the pink tint is nice.

Sheila - Classic with a Twist
    "Cherry pie red crème"
    $14/$11.20 maven
    ($4.99 on sale)

Sheila is a pretty red, and I have surprisingly few Julep reds in my collection. A nice addition.

    Abbie - It Girl
    "Sunshine yellow crème"
    $14/$11.20 maven
    ($4.99 on sale)

Sorry Abbie, but you are off to the swap shop. Yellow polish is just not my thing.

Total: the value was listed as $46. I paid $15, and felt the maven value was $24.38. A good deal, but not as good as the first box since I don't like one of the polishes.

    Mystery Box No. 9

Taylor - Classic with a Twist
    "Cool Mediterranean blue"
    (Not currently available)

A bit of internet searching revealed that Taylor was released in 2011. Wow, Julep way to hold on to some stock. She is a pretty color, but not sure how much I would use it. I'm going to keep her for now.

    Max - It Girl
    "Black and white graffiti topcoat"
    $14/$11.20 maven

When I read the splatter clue I was hoping for one of the speckled polishes released earlier this year, but I am happy to have Max. My co-worker had a mani with this polish and I loved it. So Max alone makes this bag worth it.

    Buffer Blocks
    $2

"Beautify your manicure with these two-sided buffer blocks. Use the finer grit to file, buff, and shape. Use the coarser grit to smooth deep nail ridges. Always be very gentle when buffing your nails."

Julep is currently selling a four pack of these for $2, but normally the pack of four is $4. Another product I wouldn't buy but will get used.

Total: the value was listed as $30. I paid $10, and felt the maven value was $23.40 (although I feel like Taylor should be valued less than $11.20 since it was a 2011 release). An okay deal since I really am only excited about Max.

To really make the mystery boxes worth something I also took advantage of some discount codes. (Note: I spilt the mystery boxes into two orders to use more than one code.)

    Mint Chip Sundae
    $9.99

    Dianna - Boho Glam
    "Mint green crème"
    $14/$11.20 maven

Dianna is pretty, and I have been eyeing her for awhile now. Happy to snap her up in this duo.

Winona - Classic with a Twist
    "Buff greige crème"
    $14/$11.20 maven

Yes, you guessed it. Another shade I've been coveting. Love Winona and love her paired with Dianna.

For order number one I got mystery box no. 6 and the Mint Chip Sundae duo. This brought the total to $24.99, and I used Perk10 to take off $9.99, bring my total down to $16.43 with tax. Not bad for six items.

    Bareface Cleansing Oil
    $28/$22.40 maven
    ($19.60 on sale)

"Get glowing with our best-selling Maven favorite!

    What it is:
A lightweight, antioxidant-rich cleanser for all skin types.

    What it does:
  • Gently and thoroughly dissolves makeup, dirt, and excess oil without over-drying.
  • Leaves skin soft and hydrated with no oily residue.
  • Treats your complexion to a nourishing formula that includes grapeseed oilolive oil, and Power Cell Complex™, a Julep-exclusive blend of age-defying, skin-boosting, ultra-hydrating ingredients:
  • Rosehip seed oil delivers essential nutrients to soothe and repair.
Malvaceae Lipid Extract™ improves barrier function so skin retains moisture.
Green coffee bean oil invigorates skin & promotes cell turnover."

I haven't tried this product before, but since it was free with coupon I figured it was worth a shot.

For order number two I got mystery boxes nos. 8 and 9. They were a total of $25 exactly. I added the cleanser to my cart, which brought the total to $47.40. I used the OilPerk code to remove the cost of the cleanser ($22.40), which brought the end total to $27.38 with tax. Another six items, so again, not a bad deal.

Did anyone else snag a mystery box??
