Julep Maven: The Vivid Collection (April 2014)

The 20th of each month is quickly becoming my favorite day, followed closely by the 1st. Why, you ask? The Julep Maven selection window opens, of course! Leading up to the reveal, Julep had released two sneak peeks:

Mavens were left guessing on what style profile this would be.

April's beauty products would be blush and bronzer.

Based on the sneak peeks alone, I wasn't thrilled. I like the bright colors but I do not wear a bright polish that often. Plus these colors look sheer. As for the make-up, pass. I want neither blush nor bronzer. The reviews I've read of other Julep beauty products hasn't been that great either.

Going into the reveal, I was excited but my hopes weren't super high.

*drum roll*

April's box will feature: the Vivid Collection!

Lots and lots of brights was my first thought. As much as I was reluctant to like bright and sheer polishes, I have to admit I am kinda diggin this collection. In fact, this is the closest I've yet been to considering the upgrade for the full polish collection.

My assigned style profile is "It Girl." I like this profile because it is all nail polish, which this month especially is a huge plus for me.

It Girl

Flora - "Exotic dragon fruit with blue shimmer"
Bailey - "Hyped cobalt sheer"
Maren - "Electric bubblegum sheer with blue sheen"

I like this set, but I don't love any of the colors yet. Flora reminds me a lot of Bette, which I really don't like. Bailey seems too much like Monaco, which I added-on last month. Maren is my favorite of the three, so far. We'll see what they look like in person. I am sticking to this profile simply because it is all polish. I also really like the nail art Julep did with this set.

Reminds me of a Picasso painting. My nail art skills are less then non-existent, but maybe with the May roll-out of the pilé wand and extra tools I can give this a whirl.

The other profiles are:

Classic with a Twist

Caitlin - "Shocking hibiscus with gold shimmer"
Mariska - "Juicy tangerine shimmer"
Glow Blush - Peach Bellini (customizable)

I actually really like this set. I am a bit surprised that it is CwaT though. Seems so much brighter than the usual fare. My only complaint with this duo is that it seems too much like the Jelly Shoes set that Julep featured in March. In fact, my co-worker B (who usually always gets this profile) switched to another profile for that very reason.

Bombshell

Kayla - "Electric iris sheer with violet sheen"
Tatum - "Neon chartreuse chrome"
Glow Blush - Petal Pink (customizable)

The sneak peek turned out to be the bombshell profile. Actually, the more I look at these two colors the more I like them. I think this is the profile B decided to switch to, and I can see why. Sadly, Kayla is already sold out as an add-on.

Boho Glam

Sunny - "Overexposed yellow chrome"
Phoebe - "Vibrant jungle chrome"
Glow Blush - Peach Bellini (customizable)

I like Phoebe, but much like last month's yellow - Lilou - I do not like Sunny. That, and the blush, kept me from choosing Boho Glam. As others pointed out, Phoebe looks like she could be similar to Holly - part of the Oscars clutch deal. Between the two, I think I'd rather have Holly.

Modern Beauty

Glow Blush - Peach Bellini
Glow Bronzer - Light Golden Bronze (customizable)

Pass. Enough said.

Core Classics

Mighty Nail and Cuticle Serum
Clean Slate Conditioning Nail Polish Remover and Pump
Julep Emery Board

I already have some Julep cuticle serum, so the nail polish and emery board didn't seem worth it.

Featured add-ons

Striking Duo

Brigitte - "bright white crème"

Jet - "jet black crème"

Both of these colors fall into the It Girl profile. I picked up Jet as part of the Wilde One set in February, and I just received Nicolette in a mystery add-on. Brigitte and Nicolette look like dupes to me. Needless to say, I passed on this duo. I do, however, like Julep's suggestion of using the white under the brights to make the colors pop.

Julep Signature Brushes

Julep Blush Brush
Julep Bronzer Brush

Again, pass for me.

Last, but not least:

Felicia - "black speckled mint crème"

I'm not sure why Felicia is rocking a silver cap. The other swatch pics show her with the regular black cap. Based on last month's experience of the sold out add-ons, I reserved Felicia early. She is also in the It Girl profile. I'm not sure why I felt the need to add-on this polish. It may have just been the lure of the special cap. I don't love this color, which totally brings to mind mint chocolate chip ice cream. I figured I would just dump it before the selection window closed. Then today I did a mani with another speckled pastel polish (On What Grounds? by Nicole by OPI) and now I am liking this look. I think Felicia will end up being a keeper.

Mavens can add-on up to three items. For the first time, Julep allowed mavens to add-on another profile's box for the same $19.99. Cool idea. If I didn't hate the make-up I might have considered it. Instead I chose to use one of my two remaining spots for Caitlin, the pink from the CwaT profile.

I think Caitlin will be a fun, bright color for summer. I really like to use pink as a pedi color, and I think she will be perfect. I didn't use my last add-on spot. Nothing else really called to me.

That wraps up the Vivid Collection. What did everyone else select?
